Craig Larkin received his PhD in Middle East Studies from the Institute of Arab
and Islamic Studies, University of Exeter in April 2009. His doctoral thesis
'Memory and Conflict : Remembering and Forgetting the Past in Lebanon' examined
issues of identity, trauma and memory, and approaches to conflict resolution in
post war Lebanon. Larkin has previously studied Law and Politics at Queens,
Belfast (LLB: 1995-1998) and has done a Masters in Policing and Criminal
Justice (LLM: 1998-1999), which explored paramilitary justice in socially
unstable and ethnically diverse societies: Lebanon, Northern Ireland and the
Palestinian Territories. Larkin has also been involved in research work for the
European Commission on monitoring and verifying a Peacekeeping force, in South
Lebanon (2000) and more recently employed as a research analyst for ‘Conflicts
Forum’ (2005) reviewing Islamist websites and assessing regional trends.
Larkin has spent four years in the Middle East (2001-2004) studying Arabic in both Lebanon and Syria (Damascus University), while assisting community development NGO projects in Southern Iraq and Jordan. His research interests include the politics of memory and identity; urban and social division and conflict; processes of reconciliation and forgiveness. He is an academic associate of Exeter Centre for Ethno-Political Studies.
