Dr Milena Komarova
After graduating from the University of Sofia (MA in Sociology, 1995), and working for a year as a researcher in market research, I attended the Central European University in Budapest where I got an MA degree in South-East European Studies (CEU, 1997). This interdisciplinary graduate programme on the modern history, societies and politics in the Balkans underpinned my research interests in nationalism and ethno-nationalist conflict in the Balkans; a topic I have also completed a year of post-graduate research on, as a visiting student at the University of Oxford (1998). I then worked as a social researcher for both non-governmental and academic institutions, before starting my PhD research at Queen’s University Belfast (QUB). The title of my dissertation, “You Have a Future in this Society!” Discourses on Peace-building in Northern Ireland, outlines my current research interests in civil society and ethno-national conflict in Northern Ireland; public sphere and collective identities; and discourse analysis. In 2007 I was awarded a PhD in Sociology by the School of Sociology, Social Policy and Social Work, at QUB.
Drawing on both my past and current research interests, areas for future research include: civil society’s role in peace-building in a comparative perspective; exploring the complex connections between collective identities, urban governance/policy processes, and public space.
