Prof Allan Cochrane

Allan Cochrane is Professor of Urban Studies at the Open University. Between 1998 and 2004 he was also Pro-Vice Chancellor (Students). His academic interests are broadly clustered around issues of urban policy and politics. His recent research has drawn on two quite distinct cases. The first relates to Berlin’s reimagination and repositioning over the last two decades, as the divided city has become unified in a united Germany and a changing Europe; and the second, building on the co-authored book Rethinking the Region (Routledge, 1998), to the changing nature of urban and regional governance in London and the South-East of England, because of the ways in which it has emerged as a (mega) city region,. Despite their different empirical bases each of these areas of research raises important questions about contemporary cities and regions, and how they can be understood. Allan Cochrane is currently centrally involved in an ESRC project which aims to explore the role and potential of higher education institutions in processes of regional social transformation. His recent publications include Understanding Urban Policy: A Critical Approach (Blackwell, 2007).
